Former Sen. Bivins recaps historic session

Springfield capitol

Former Republican state Sen. Tim Bivins (Lee County) can hardly believe what he witnessed in Springfield last month.

“I’m feeling nostalgic,” Bivins posted on Facebook following the conclusion of the 2019 spring session in which lawmakers pass legislation that extends abortion up to birth, expands legalized gambling and makes Illinois a Sanctuary State. "Almost every week for close to 11 years we would write an article called Week in Review, recapping what occurred in Springfield that week. So I thought I would give a brief review one more time.”

Bivins made certain to point out that a week he thought was marred by total dysfunction was capped by lawmakers giving themselves a 2.5-percent salary raise, along with 25-percent and 33-percent increases in mileage and per diem, respectively.

Critics like Bivins have also ripped Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s new $40 billion spending plan that raises taxes, increases spending and borrows even more to hold it all together.
