Bureau Valley District #340 Board of Education met May 28.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

Determining that a quorum was present, President Yepsen called the regular meeting to order at 7:00 pm and directed the Secretary to call the roll.

ROLL CALL

PRESENT: Dye, Johnson, Maynard, Olds, Spencer, Wiggim, Yepsen

ABSENT: None

Mr. Yepsen introduced Jason Stabler, new BV Superintendent. Mr. Stabler will be starting full time July 1st. Mr. Yepsen also thanked Kristal LeRette for her time at Bureau Valley. This will be her last board meeting.

Vicki Litherland, BVHS Athletic Director, spoke about the Sports Physical Clinic that the school hosted. School Nurse, Kristin Ledergerber, reported that 93 students used the services of the clinic. Five physicians and eight nurses were there to help with the sports physicals.

Bureau Valley North and Bureau Valley South Junior High state track qualifiers were recognized.

There was no public comment.

It was moved by Maynard and seconded by Johnson to approve the consent agenda items:

It was moved by Olds and seconded by Wiggim to approve the FY19 Tentative Budget Amendment as presented.

It was moved by Spencer and seconded by Olds to approve the K-5 and 6-12 2019-2020 Student Handbooks as presented.

Board Policy Updates were presented. Tiffany Johnson, Policy Committee Chairperson, reported that no major changes were being presented. There is a new policy that addresses Targeted School Violence. This policy will be approved at a later time, as the administration has time to prepare for the changes this policy requires. It was moved by Johnson and seconded by Spencer to approve the board policy updates as presented.

William Anderson and Caseelyn Johnston, BVHS Ag Teachers presented information on a proposed FFA Livestock Building. The building could be used for labs for science and ag classes. It could also be used to host CDE events for the FFA Chapter. The estimated cost is $100,000 with approximately $78,000 already available. This money has come from grants, fundraisers and a donation from the Ag Boosters. Because the building will be built on school property, the proper permits will need to be attained from the Regional Office of Education. It was moved by Olds and seconded by Wiggim to approve construction of an FFA Livestock Building as presented subject to ROE and ISBE approval.

It was moved by Wiggim and seconded by Spencer to approve the permanent transfer of $100,000 from Working Cash to the building fund.

MOTION CARRIED: 7-0-0 Absent

The board was given information on the Latin Honors system of calculating weighted grades and class rank. Amber Harper, interim superintendent, would like a special meeting scheduled in June to discuss this in more detail. Lynn Olds commented that this system more accurately celebrates a 4.0. GPA. Also, Mrs. LeRette has worked on a Special Education Workload model that needs discussed.

Mr. Yepsen stated that the vote regarding JH Boys Baseball would be moved after executive session.

Justin Yepsen gave an update on the construction project. Lockers, cabinets and flooring are being installed. An Open House in early August is being planned. The playground equipment will be installed with help from the community. July 15th and 16th will be the installation days. The company brings the equipment and tools. The community provides the man power.

It was moved by Johnson and seconded by Maynard to enter into executive session at 7:50 p.m. for the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity, the setting of a price for sale or lease of property owned by the public body, Collective negotiating matters between the public body and its employees or their representatives, or deliberations concerning salary schedules for one or more classes of employees, Student disciplinary cases, and/or Discussion of minutes of meetings lawfully closed under the Open Meetings Act, whether for purposes of approval by the body of the minutes or semi-annual review of the minutes.

It was moved by Olds and seconded by Maynard to close the executive session at 9:00 p.m. and return to open session.

It was moved by Johnson and seconded by Olds to approve and retain the executive session meeting minutes of April 18, 2019, April 23, 2019 and May 4, 2019.

It was moved by Olds and seconded by Wiggim to accept retirement notice of Carol Larkin as BVHS Teacher at the end of the 2022-2023 school year and the retirement notice of David Larking as BVHS Teacher at the end of the 2022-23 school year, and accept the resignation of Jason Spang as BVHS Principal, Lauren Spang as BVN Title 1 Teacher, Joan Christian as BVS Paraprofessional, Molly Gloria as BVHS Paraprofessional, Laurel Forlano as BVHS Flags Sponsor, Andrea Bauer as BVHS Cheerleading Coach, Brianne DeBrock as BVHS Assistant Softball Coach, David Lind as BVHS Head Teacher, and Brian Humphrey as BVHS Head Softball Coach.

It was moved by Olds and seconded by Spencer to approve the employment of Robert Benck as BVHS Cross Country Coach, Tracey Schoff as BV JH Head Robotics Coach, Keegan Roth as BV JH Assistant Robotics Coach, Darcy Kepner as BV JH Head Girls Softball Coach, Ryan Schisler as BV JH Head Boys Baseball coach and Brett Helms as BV JH Assistant Boys Baseball Coach.

It was moved by Johnson and seconded by Wiggim to approve the transfer of Laura Reuter from Part Time BVS Paraprofessional to Full Time BV Elementary Paraprofessional and to approve Chris Maynard as Volunteer BV JH Girls Softball Coach.

It was moved by Wiggim and seconded by Spencer to approve the addition of JH Boys Baseball for the 2019-2020 school year.

No discussion or vote was held with regard to the JFL program.
