U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois) rejected the newly enacted $1.9 trillion federal stimulus relief plan faulting it for being "one of the largest expenditures" and with funding that is not tied to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kinzinger's comments on March 10 also echoed Republicans' complaints the stimulus was a partisan plan that left the GOP out of negotiations.

"Congress has been able to work in a bipartisan fashion on COVID-relief measures five times thus far, and I was proud to support those efforts," Kinzinger said in a statement. "That's why it was so disappointing that my Democrat colleagues chose to take such a partisan path on this recent effort."

President Joe Biden did meet with Republican senators about COVID-19 relief in February. Republicans offered a $618 billion plan that would not provide funding for state and local governments and offered $30 billion less than the Democrats' plan for COVID-19 vaccinations. The package supported direct payments of $1,000 but for a much small group of people.

Kinzinger said the bill that now stands as law spends way too much without doing nearly enough to help the people it's billed to.

"I voted against H.R.1319 because it does not do enough to help people suffering from the pandemic, and yet it still manages to spend way too much money — money that our children will have to account for down the road," he said. "I'll continue to work with my colleagues in the House to ensure the American people have what they need to fight through this pandemic."
