Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) spoke about Senate Joint Resolution 6 which would honor the memory of former police officer Dennis M. Neary.

She has been advocating for this effort for several years.

According to Rezin, the resolution would rename Route 113 from Carbon Hill Road to Virginia Street in Coal City as the "Dennis M. Neary Memorial Highway.”

“Dennis began his career in law enforcement with the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department,” she said from the Senate floor. “In 1972 he was hired as a police officer in Coal City and went on to serve as the chief of police for over 30 years. During that time he also served 35 years with the Coal City volunteer fire department and many of those years as captain. He also served as an EMT for 6 years. In 2002 he received the Coal City community service award.”

Neary was born on July 11, 1950, to Edwin and Marilyn of Morris. He attended Morris schools and Joliet Junior College.

He passed away on Oct. 2, 2016, leaving behind his wife of 43 years, Cathy, two sons, and three grandchildren.

Senate Joint Resolution 6 was adopted with 53-0 votes in the Senate.
