The Illinois Freedom Caucus announced on Mar. 24 a legislative package of ten bills aimed at lowering taxes, increasing government transparency, and supporting working families in the state.
The group said these measures are designed to address what they see as high tax burdens and a need for reforms in how government operates. The bills cover three main areas: taxes, government reform, and policies for working families.
Among the tax-focused proposals are HB 2608 sponsored by Representative Adam M. Niemerg of Dieterich and HB 3118 from Representative Blaine Wilhour of Beecher City. “Illinois taxpayers are being fleeced,” Wilhour said. “We have the highest property taxes in the nation and Illinois taxpayers pay the highest combination of state and local taxes in the country. It is time to give them some relief.”
For government reform, the caucus highlighted SB 2226 by Senator Andrew S. Chesney of Freeport; HB 5613 by Representative David Friess of Red Bud; and HB 1221 from Chris Miller of Hindsboro. Miller said, “We need secure elections, clear transparency in how our money is being spent and we need to roll back government intrusion in our lives.” He added that “the FOID Card does nothing to prevent crimes” and called for focusing on criminal accountability rather than restrictions affecting law-abiding citizens.
Legislation targeting support for working families includes HB 4121-4 (Rep. Brad Halbrook), HB 4030 (Rep. David Friess), SB 3117 (Senator Chesney), HB 2624 (Rep. Niemerg), and HB 4148 (Rep. Jed Davis).
The caucus did not provide additional background or details about each bill but emphasized their commitment to advancing legislation they believe will improve quality of life across Illinois.
