Bureau Valley Community Unit School District 340 Board of Education met August 15.
Bureau Valley Community Unit School District 340 Board of Education met Aug. 15.
Here is the minutes provided by the Board:
Determining that a quorum was present, President King called the special meeting of the public hearing to order at 6:00 pm and directed the Secretary to call the roll.
Present: Dye, Johnson, King, Siltman (via phone), Yepsen
Absent: Olds, Wiggim
In Olds absence, Johnson made a motion to appoint Karen Sierens as Secretary Pro-Tem, Siltman gave the second.
There were no members of the public in attendance.
Mr. Lawson explained to the board members that the initial waiver for grades K-5 from daily PE to 3 days per week was originally obtained for the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years. It is time to renew this waiver for another two years. This is the last renewal. If the district wishes to have the waiver in place after the 2019-2020 school year, the district will have to re-apply. No more renewals will be available. State code only allows two renewals and this is the second renewal.
Mr. Lawson also explained that having the waiver in place gives the district options so that PE could be offered with a certified PE instructor for 3 days per week. Then the other two days could be used to incorporate core curriculum concepts in reading and math. The waiver creates potential flexibility in scheduling and may allow the district to reduce staff.
Because there was no testimony for or against the renewal of the waiver, it was moved by Yepsen and seconded by Dye to adjourn the meeting.
The public hearing was adjourned at 6:15pm.
