Coal City Community Unit School District 1 students suspended 44 times in a single school year

Coal City Community Unit School District 1 reported 44 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 44 students during the year. That equates to 2 percent of the 2,206 students enrolled.

Of the 29 in-school suspensions, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for violence without physical injury. The category includes 10 incidents. There were 10 incidents of unspecified reasons. For 23 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 15 out-of-school suspensions, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for violence that caused physical injury. The category includes seven incidents. There were four incidents of violence without physical injury. For eight incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
