Just 15 hours’ worth of free training will allow volunteers to work directly with adult learners in north central Illinois, courtesy of Illinois Valley Community College’s (IVCC) “I-READ” Adult Literacy Program -- with no previous experience required.
Valley residents interested in tutoring will be matched to individuals over age 17 whose reading and language skills need improvement. Volunteers have the option of meeting their students either in a local library or in an adult education classroom.
Free on-campus training sessions are scheduled for 1:30-4:30 p.m. on the following four weekdays: Monday, July 18; Wednesday, July 20; Monday, July 25, and Wednesday, July 27, all at IVCC’s Room CTC-214. The campus is located at 815 N. Orlando Smith St. in Oglesby.
Volunteers whose schedules prohibit the posted training sessions are eligible to participate via on-line training. For information on the I-READ program, go to www.ivcc.edu/adulted. To register for the training sessions, contact Angela Dunlap, I-READ program manager, at 815-224-0372.
The I-READ adult literacy program is funded by a grant through the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.
Illinois Valley Community College is a two-year institution of higher learning serving Putnam, Bureau, LaSalle, DeKalb, Grundy, Lee, Livingston and Marshall counties. The campus was built in 1972 and enrolls approximately 4500 students.
