Jerry Long, Republican candidate for the state House District 76 seat, recently called for Auditor General Frank Mautino's resignation.
Mautino currently is under state and federal investigation for irregularities in campaign spending while he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives.
Mautino served as the District 76 representative from 1991 to 2015, when he was appointed to the 10-year auditor general position. After taking office in October, Mautino's campaign fund expenditures came under scrutiny by state and federal investigators.
Despite questioning by lawmakers, Mautino has remained silent regarding approximately $200,000 spent at a Spring Valley service station over the past 10 years and $259,000 paid to a local bank since 1999. After Mautino ignored calls to take an unpaid leave or step down, 20 Republican lawmakers filed House Joint Resolution (HJR) 158. The resolution calls for Mautino's removal from office.
"In light of this resolution and Frank Mautino’s continued silence on the matter, I call on Frank Mautino to resign from his position as auditor general immediately," Long said. "Mautino’s campaign expenditures are highly suspect, and Michael Madigan’s Chicago Machine has manufactured nothing but scandal and embarrassment for the state of Illinois. We must work hard to restore public trust in Springfield, which is why I applaud the legislature’s efforts to remove Frank Mautino as auditor general and avoid a potential state constitutional crisis."
