Jerry Long, the Republican candidate for the District 76 state House seat, expressed his willingness to sacrifice his job and seniority to run for office and serve the constituents in his district recently.
In his previous run for the House, Long was refused a leave of absence, so he left his job at USF Holland and financed his own campaign. Long took a part-time job to help pay his bills. The current campaign has required the same sacrifice.

Long returned to his job after the 2014 election, but when he requested a leave of absence to run for office in 2016, he was denied a second time. He has again left his job to run for office.
Long is a conservative who supports smaller government and lower taxes. His no-waste viewpoint influences his own finances. He used his truck as an example -- it had accumulated more than a million miles before he replaced it.
"Now that I'm fully focused on this campaign, I have retired my second truck," Long said. "The first one had about 1,299,000 miles, and this one had 1,134,000 miles on it. In my career, I have logged a total of 2,850,000 verifiable miles. That's an average of almost 100,000 miles a year over nearly 30 years. I bring this up to show the dedication and commitment that I bring to whatever job I'm doing. You can be sure that if you elect me as your state representative, I will work extremely hard for the people of the 76th District."
