Rep. David Allen Welter (R-Dist. 75), who was tapped to replace John Anthony, recently shared his views as a young lawmaker.
Welter served as Grundy County Board chairman before being tapped to replace incumbent Anthony.
"I'm a young guy that ran for local government because I didn't like what I was seeing," Welter said. "I've spent the last six years fighting the good ol' boy system. I'm proud of what we've done locally, I look forward to fighting for our area in Springfield. Nothing special, just trying to do what is just and right."
When Welter began his political career, he was encouraged to run for the local school board. Instead, he ran for a county seat and won. He was inspired to seek office after realizing that government spending was out of control. His knowledge, persistence and ability to communicate with the residents of his county led him to victory at age 19.
While the older lawmakers may view Welter as a youngster, he already has six years of political experience under his belt in Grundy County. He reminds the younger generation that the decisions made in Springfield today will affect their futures as Illinois residents.
Sworn into office on July 16, Welter will serve the remainder of Anthony's term. He faces Democratic challenger Martha Shugart in the November general election.
