State Representative David Welter (R-Morris) spoke out in favor of local controls of schools recently. Strong schools are important to the well-being of the students and the community.
"I believe in local control of schools by parents and locally-elected school boards," Welter said. "A one-size-fits-all model dictated by state and federal bureaucrats does not serve the best interests of students here in Grundy, Kendall, LaSalle and Will Counties."
As part of Welter's desire to include parents, teachers and administrators in the legislative process, he is seeking members for his educational advisory board. The advisory board will provide a sounding board with local input on legislation that affects education in the 75th District. Interested residents can contact Welter's office or go to www.repwelter.com and fill out a contact form.
Welter is also concerned about the unfunded mandates required by the state. Without state funding local governments must turn to property tax increases in order to fulfill the requirements placed upon municipalities, agencies and school districts. This adds a financial burden on the homeowners, who are already paying the second highest property taxes in the nation.
"I will fight against unfunded mandates on our schools and work to give parents and local school boards more control over education here in our community," Welter said.
