Report: 15 percent of homes in Illinois Valley "seriously underwater" on their mortgages

Close to one out of every six homeowners in Illinois Valley has a mortgage that's 125 percent or more of their home's value as of March 31, according to a report by Attom Data Solutions, a California-based provider of property data.

An Illinois Valley Times analysis of the report found that in Illinois Valley, 14.7 percent of homeowners were "seriously underwater," as defined by Attom.

In Bureau, approximately one in eight homeowners owe 25 percent more than their home's estimated market value, Attom reports.

In La Salle, more than 30 percent of homeowners are in major mortgage trouble, while in Putnam the number of homeowners deemed "seriously underwater" was nonexistent.
