Seneca Community Consolidated School District 170 Board of Education met April 19.

Here is the minutes provided by the Board:

The Board of Education met for their regular scheduled meeting at 7:00 p.m. on April 19th, 2017 at the Seneca Grade School North Campus Board Room.

President Sangston called for roll call.

Present: Applebee, Hovious, Quigley, Sulzberger, Thompson and Sangston Absent: Bedeker

Thompson moved to accept the regular and closed session minutes from the March 15th, 2017; seconded by Hovious.

Hearing of Citizens: No comments

Hearing of Teachers: Christine Armstrong, 8th grade Lit. /Lang. teacher, her students are finishing this week their World War II research paper which tied together with Ann Las social studies class and her “Medal of Honor” speech and the 8th grade field trip to the Route 66 and Livingston County War museum. Her class will finish up the year reading “The Outsiders”. Justin Holman, 7/8 grade math and Julie Hamilton 6th math teachers reviewed with the board several different math series they have evaluated. They have found one they really like that follows closely to the state standards, has self-paced online component, excite in depth textbook, video problems and also has capabilities to add additional curriculum to the resource page.

Thompson moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report as presented: Education $492,176.90; Building $86,844.18; Transportation $16,536.58; IMRF $22,535.86; Tort $3,897.00, Totaling $619,690.92; seconded by Quigley.

Thompson moved to pay the following monthly bills: Education $70,045.98; Building $48,633.80 Transportation $12,630.08; Tort $3,897.00; Total $135,206.86; seconded by Hovious.

Quigley moved to approve the following policy revision: 2:100, 3:70, 4:15, 4:180, 5:70, 5:80, 5:110, 5:120, 5:140, 5:210, 5:230, 5:300, 5:320, 6:70, 6:185, and 7:100; seconded by Sulzberger.

Hovious moved to set May 3rd at 6:30 p.m. for the special meeting for reorganization of school board; seconded by Thompson.

Sulzberger moved to set the school lunch price at $2.40 for the 2017-2018 school year seconded by Quigley.

Thompson moved to approve the listed handbook changes and updates for the 2017-2018 student parent handbook; seconded by Hovious. Handbook revisions include the visitor section procedures using the identification RAPTOR system, and change all quarters to trimester grading periods.

Quigley moved to accept the Mini-Bus Bid from Central States Bus Company for new Blue Bird bus in the amount of $62,209.95 which included school’s trade-in; seconded by Sulzberger.

Thompson moved to accept the low bid from D Construction for the construction and pavement of Athletic Field parking lot expansion at a cost of $93,138.91; seconded by Hovious. This addition will double the size of the current parking area.

Thompson moved to accept the lone escalator milk bid from Prairie Farms, seconded by Sulzberger. If milk prices do not fluctuate there would be potential saving to go with escalator over firm bid.

Quigley moved to accept the lone bread bid from Alpha Old World; seconded by Thompson. They are the district’s current provider.

Principal McGhee talked about the “Kindness Cards” weekly winners for students and the drawing for rewards given out before spring break to students. She thanked Delta Theta Tau Sorority for planning the visit from the Easter Bunny. She also thanked P.S.O. for Book Fair week and a very successful Family Literacy night. Thank you also to Mrs. Erica Read, SHS family and consumer class teacher and her Early Childhood students who came and helped run the reading centers that night. Principal McGhee thanked the technology department for their help during the PARAC testing and the board for the granola bars and water handed out for testing to students. Next week the students will welcome the Jesses White Tumblers. The North Campus field day is scheduled for May 23rd.

Principal Severson commented graduation is one month away and will be held May 19th for 8th graders at the South Campus at 7:00 p.m. The student of the month breakfast honoring each month’s student will be held on Saturday, May 20th. PARAC testing is nearly completed with only the science assessment left to be completed by both the 5th and 8th grade classes. Principal Severson thanked the P.S.O. for providing the pizza for students during the lock-in held on Thursday before spring break. He also thanked all the staff that helped plan and supervise the games and the talent show. He talked about the upcoming Earth Day activities that Ann Las has helped arrange. The 7th grade students have an agreement with IDNR Office of Land Management to help keep parts of I&M canal clean. This project will start Saturday which will include a visit to the Seneca Heritage Museum. On May 1st the LaSalle County Bar Assoc. will conduct a program for students “Worries of the World Web”, internet safety. Principal Severson thanked Mrs. Hamilton for the great job she did running the IVC conference math contest. Nearly 85 students from 5 schools participated in this event.

Quigley moved to go into Executive Session at 7:54 p.m. for legal and personnel; seconded by Hovious.

Thompson moved to return to Open Session at 9:25 p.m.; seconded by Hovious

Thompson moved to accept the resignation letter from Tim Brungard, cross county coaching position, with regret; seconded by Quigley.

Thompson moved to renew Principal McGhee and Principal Severson contract for the 2017-2018 school year; seconded by Quigley.

Thompson moved to increase the non-certified hourly salary schedule. Hourly level 2 and level 3 will see an additional base increase of.25 cents along with new step increase schedule; seconded by Quigley.

Committee Report: There will be a board member demo next month on the new RAPTOR visitor system.

Communications: Thank you from the 8th grade class for the field trip to the Livingston War Museum.

Old Business: Senior Citizens Luncheon is set for Friday, May 12th, at the South Campus. Board member reminder to file your Statement of Economic Interest before May 1st.

New Business: President Sangston recognized board member Dan Bedeker for his 16 years of dedicated service to Seneca Grade School #170. During his tenure he has served eight years as president and has been very active in many projects. President Sangston also introduced Nick Mancuso to the board who will stepping into the open seat on the board.

Thompson moved to adjourn at 9:30 p.m.; seconded by Quigley.
