Princeton-area sports programs and events are going strong this summer, according to the Bureau County Republican online site BCR News.

From volleyball camps and softball and basketball tryouts to the annual alumni game, students and families have a wide range of activities to choose from.

The 2017 Midwest Alumni Football game is set for 7 p.m. on July 21 at Bryant Field. Thirty-three graduates of Princeton High School will take on Amboy in tackle football with full pads. The event is free for children 6 and under and $10 for others. Half of the proceeds from pre-sale tickets will go to the football program at Princeton High School and the Junior Football League of Central Illinois.

The football game takes place three days before softball tryouts for Princeton Logan Junior High School. Students interested in joining the team can give it their best shot between 5 and 7 p.m. on July 24 at the high school.

Also on July 24, the high school will host a football camp for ninth- through 12th-graders at 8 a.m. and a boys' and girls’ golf camp at 3:30 p.m, according to the Princeton Tigers.

Softball abounds as well. The Chris Walker Softball Skills Camp will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on July 17-18 at Princeton’s West Side Park. Walker, the softball coach at Putnam County high and junior high schools, hosts the camp for girls going into third through ninth grades this fall. Walker also offers one-on-one pitching and hitting lessons.

The Pannebaker Gym is hosting the Princeton Logan Junior High girls' basketball camp for girls who will be in third through eighth grades. Tryouts are July 10-13. Registration for prospects is open.

It’s also not too late for softball prospects to try out for the Bureau County Blaze girls fast-pitch team. Girls 9 and under can give it a shot from 3 to 5 p.m. on July 30; girls 10 and under are welcome from 3 to 5 p.m. on July 23; and girls 14 and under can try out from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 20.

Illinois Valley Community College will host the Eagle Volleyball Camp on July 28-30.
