Rep. Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) recently noted that his Summer Reading Club Program is quickly drawing to a close, with a deadline of Aug. 11.
The program, “Chill Out with Books,” encourages grade school students to read over their summer break from school. They are challenged to read eight books, with books longer than 150 pages counting as two books. Those who complete the challenge will receive a certificate of participation, with one lucky student winning a party for their class in the next school year, Demmer said in a recent release on his website.
Students and parents interested in the program must get a Summer Reading Club brochure, which can be downloaded on Demmer’s website or requested via his Rochelle district office. As students complete each book, their parent or guardian should sign off on the brochure, which must be returned to Demmer’s office by Aug. 11.
“Students who read over the summer are better prepared to return to school in the Fall,” Demmer said of the program, according to the release. “Reading is fun, as well as being great for education, enjoyment, and lifelong learning. I am proud to join area schools and libraries in helping promote summer reading to area students.”
