LaSalle-Peru Township High School seniors Matthew Klein and Gabrielle Sawin are exemplars of what the school hopes to see in all of its students, according to its website.
Klein recently earned the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Citizenship Award, while Sawin won the counterpart award from the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).
The honors recognize students for their dependability, service, leadership and patriotism, and winners are selected by both the students’ fellow class members and the faculty.

Klein is student council president and an active member in Renaissance and the Future Business Leaders of America, for which he also serves as president. Following graduation, he plans to study business and technology at a four-year university.
Sawin played soccer for four years and ran cross-country for three, and is also active with the math team, foreign language club and student council. She plans to study biology at a four-year university and eventually become an optometrist.
“What sets Matt apart as a leader is his ability to inspire others to be their best selves and his willingness to give credit and let others shine,” Principal Stephanie Jeanblanc said on the website. “(Gabrielle) is the kind of leader that sets the standard of respect, hard work and kindness. With these attributes, she is certainly going to be a difference maker in this world.”
