The Bruce Township supervisor is trying to get around a recent change in the tax code by putting excess funds somewhere they aren't supposed to go, according to the Edgar County Watchdogs (ECW).
Under changes to the law prompted by an ECW article, a township must put excess funds into its general assistance fund, the group said. Instead, Bruce Township trustees recently mailed a notice alerting residents that the supervisor will put the funds toward emergency assistance.
“It is becoming very clear with this misinformation campaign and push back from the trustees, that this board has no plans on doing the right thing and giving the taxpayers their money back,” the ECW said on its Illinois Leaks website. “Instead, they intend on giving it to whomever they choose in an emergency assistance program. Such a path sends a message to the taxpayers, it’s their money, not yours. We say, wrong answer.”
The ECW said it was not aware of a meeting in which the letter was discussed, and a request for review has been submitted to the attorney general.
