Seneca Community Consolidated School District 170 Board of Education met Oct. 18.

Thompson moved to accept the regular and closed session minutes from the September 20th, 2017; seconded by Applebee.

Hearing of Citizens: No Comments
Hearing of Teachers: Sarah Schaefer, 5/6 grade Special Education teacher, has 14 students on her case load. Twelve of those students are new to the building and or new students to the district. So students are were busy settling into their new routines. She is also part of the student activities rewards committee which is planning the upcoming year for students. Gena Wallin, 5th grade, ELA teacher, highlighted the Cantigny field trip. Students really enjoy the First Division Museum and grounds which have been fully renovated in 2017. Col. McCormick was truly a remarkable soldier, crusading publisher and philanthropist who cares deeply for fostering education and engaging citizens in history. After attending this field trip students will follow up doing resource, preparing a speech and presenting a power point on topics they discovered while at Cantigny.
Principal Severson congratulated the state qualifiers that participated last weekend at the IESA state cross country meet that was held in Bloomington. Coach Wallin recognized medal winner, 8th grader, Audrey Jenkins, 7th grader, Riley Sanburg and 6th grader Austin Aldridge. This is her first year as cross country coach and only the third year Seneca Grade School has had a team. She has totally enjoyed watching her runners achieve many of their personal goals. Audrey Jenkins has worked very hard and truly accomplished so much medaling all three years in cross country. Everyone from the grade school is looking forward to watching her compete in high school.
Quigley moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report as given by treasurer, Rob Maierhofer: Education $506,043.69; Building $71,458.33; Transportation $9,069.62; IMRF $21,211.38; Capital Projects $97,368.16; Tort $844.46 Totaling $705,995.64; seconded by Mancuso. He reviewed the real estate tax and general state aid payments that was received during the month.

Thompson moved to pay the following monthly bills: Education $51,131.66; Building $32,970.03; Transportation $3,570.94; Capital Projects $97,368.19; Tort $844.46 Total $185,885.25; seconded by Quigley.

Thompson moved to approve the Application for Recognition for North and South Campus; seconded by Mancuso.

Quigley moved to accept the quote for excavating about 30 acres of land behind the South Campus from Widman Excavating in the amount of $5, 000.00; seconded by Mancuso. In order to get that property to a point where can be seeded and mowed the land will need to be leveled, with both rock and concrete buried.

Principal Severson covered the fall field trips students at the south campus have been taking. All trips have been very educational and enjoyable to students. He thanked Mrs. Las for planning the 8th grade field trip to Springfield. Students visited the Old Capitol, Lincoln’s tomb and the Lincoln Museum. Mrs. Wagner headed the 7th grade trip to Starved Rock where students took in a falcon presentation and helped clean up the park with community service. He mentioned that Sherry St Clair will be in the building on October 26th, consulting with science teachers to align common core with the NGSS.
Principal McGhee mentioned The Kindergarten and 1st grade both had field trips to Heap’s Giant pumpkin farm, even though the weather did not cooperate, students were given a wristband for a return trip on a drier day. The 4th graders will be heading to the historic I&M Canal to have a ride on the barge pulled by the mule. She thanked the fire department for the educational visit students K-2 grade had at the Seneca Fire Station while several fireman also came to school to teach fire safety to our preschool classes. Sherry StClair will also be making classroom visits, working with north campus teachers to align their science curriculum with the new NGSS. Mrs. McGhee also to mention the annual Halloween Parade will be Tuesday, October 31st, at 2:15 p.m.
Thompson moved to go into Executive Session at 7:23 p.m. for legal and personnel; seconded by Quigley.

Thompson moved to grant maternity leave to Janelle Berg, part-time nurse; seconded by Quigley. Mrs. Berg plans to return at Christmas Break. During this time former nurse Jeannie Lueth and Cathy Larson will fill in the majority of the days.

Thompson accepted the resignation of part time housekeeping, 3 hour position, Crystal Fessler, effective September 26th, 2017; seconded by Quigley.

Thompson moved to approve Dakota Jones, to serve as a volunteer for 7th grade boys basketball coach, under Mr. Yandell for the 2017-2018 season; seconded by Quigley. Dakota will be completing the districts requirements for volunteers.

Thompson moved to hire Kara Ellis, part-time preschool aide, for the rest of the 2017-2018 school year.

Communications: Board received a thank you from the Deer Park Education Foundation for donated items. Board received a thank you from Mrs. Novotney for the “Flag of Valor” she received at the last board meeting in honor of many years she had planned the September 11th program. The eighth graders thanked the board for making their Springfield trip possible.

New Business: Board wishes a speedy recovery to board member Jim Hovious who just last week underwent his third back surgery.
