City of Peru Park and Recreation met November 14.

Here is the minutes provided by the Board:

Ray Zborowski called the meeting to order at 6:32

Attendance: Board Chairman-Ray Zborowski, Board Members- Janice Grabowski, Steve Michelini, Bill Steve, Linda Dzierzynski, and John Fusinatto and Recreation Director- Seth Brannan

Absent: Simon Kampwerth

I- Guest

Alderman- Mike Sapienza; Gena Wallin

New Board Member:

On Monday, November 13, City Council approved Mayor Harl’s appointment of Gena Wallin to serve on the Peru Park and Recreation Board. Gena W will be taking the place of Janice G (further information in the communications section).

II- Previous Minutes

A motion to approve the minutes of the October 10, 2017 meeting was made by Linda D and seconded by Bill S. The motion passed unanimously and all were in favor.

III- Revenue and Expense Report

Bill S reported on the revenue and expense report dated October 31, 2017. A motion to approve the report was made by Janice G and seconded by John F. The motion passed unanimously and all were in favor.

IV- New Business

Communications:

A follow up with interest in downtown Peru business involvement in the Christmas Parade is postponed this year due to inability to gain enough interest.

Peru library expressed interest in incorporating a “Story on Signs” in the future. This idea would involve a story being spread out over various signs posted in the park in which readers would walk from sign to sign as they read the story. There was discussion of possibly initiating this concept at Baker Lake next year.

Janice G presented her letter of resignation which was then read to the board by Ray Z. Janice G was recognized for her 10 years of service to the Peru Park and Recreation Board. Ray Z presented a plaque from the board to further recognize her service. The board thanks her for her service and wishes her the best in her future endeavors.

Seth B presented that he had contacted the Peru Super Bowl with the possibility of organizing a bowling camp this winter or spring. Preliminary possibilities, dates, and cost were presented. Further discussion will be tabled to the December meeting.

2018 Budget:

Janice G presented the 2018 budget which will run from April 31, 2018 through May 1, 2019. Discussion was had and further discussion was tabled until the December meeting.

Discuss Halloween Parade:

Discussion was had on the Halloween parade in reguards to the good turnout, great weather, order of events, and various activities held at the conclusion of the parade at Washington Park. Roughly 150 treat bags were passed out to children in attendance. Looking forward to next year, it was discussed to incorporate signs along the driveway through Washington Park. These signs would help inform what activities are taking place and where to go within the park to enjoy them.

Spring Valley Christmas Parade:

The City of Peru was invited to participate in the Spring Valley Lighted Christmas Parade, held on Saturday, November 25. Seth B has registered to have the City of Peru float included in the parade. It was advised to have a backup generator on the float to help ensure we do not lose power to the lights on the float. Seth B will prepare the float for upcoming Christmas Parades.

Peru Christmas Parade and possible involvement of downtown Peru local business:

An invitation to register for the Peru Christmas Parade will be sent out in the News Tribune. Interested parties will register with Seth B. Alderman Mike S will lead the organization of events at City Hall to follow the parade. (See communications section for involvement of downtown Peru local business). Discussion was also had in regards to the Santa Fly In at the Peru airport. Cookies and drinks will be provided to attendees of the Santa Fly In.

Discuss and possible motion to hire Harmony Guaranteed:

Discussion was had in regards to the hiring Harmony Guaranteed to perform in the Peru Christmas festivities on December 2. It was decided that Harmony Guaranteed would perform at the Peru Library prior to the parade during lineups. They would also be singing on the City of Peru float during the parade and at the entrance to City Hall at the conclusion of the parade. A motion to approve the hire of Harmony Guaranteed to perform the above duties was made by Janice G and seconded by Steve M. The motion passed unanimously and all were in favor with evaluation of the agreement in regards to next year.

Discuss and possible motion to hire LaSalle County Broadcasting Company for advertisement of the Peru Christmas Parade and Fly in on their radio stations:

Ray Z presented the proposed ad to be aired on LaSalle County Broadcasting radio stations. The ad included the City of Peru Christmas Parade on December 2, the Pearl Harbor Day events on December 2, and Santa Fly In on December 3. Proposed ads would be ran Monday 11/27 through Friday 12/01. A motion to hire LaSalle County Broadcasting Company to air the proposed ad was made by Janice G and seconded by Bill S, with Linda D in opposition. The motion carried.

V- Unfinished Business

Disc Golf Course update at Baker Lake:

Ray Z presented that he had recently spoken with both Pete Etscheid and Jeff King about updates for disc golf at Baker Lake. It sounds promising that they may be able to set the baskets and posts for signs before winter.

Christmas Lights:

Steve M presented that he will be working to finalize plans with Jeff King for Christmas Lights at Centennial Park.

VII- Adjournment

A motion to adjourn was made at 7:50 by Janice G and seconded by Linda D. The motion passed unanimously.
