Lena

The Spring Valley Police Department has released a police report detailing the battery arrest of the wife of Auditor General Frank Mautino, Lena Alfano.

Below is the narrative portion of the police report:

Lena Alfano

On Saturday, May 19, 2018, Margaret Carey, Shanna Cawley and Angie Cinotte arrived at post. Margaret advised she wanted to file a report regarding a battery. I, Officer Kinkin, brought Margaret into the Intake Room. Margaret was crying and was bleeding from her right elbow. I asked Margaret if she needed medical attention for her injury and she said no.

Margaret advised that she and Shanna were at Jack's Place. She saw Lena Alfano, who she is acquaintances with. Lena's friend, who Margaret did not recognize, came up to Margaret and warned her that she should leave or Lena was going to cause a problem. She state that she started trying to find Shanna to tell her she was going to leave. Lena approached her and asked "Are you Margaret Carey?" and she told Lena that she was. A few minutes later, as Margaret was standing with her back towards the front door, Lena came up to her and pushed her with both hands. Margaret stated that this made the door open and Lena continued to push her until they were near the sidewalk. Margaret stated that she fell backwards onto the concrete. As this was happening, Lena was calling Margaret's husband a thief and accusing him of stealing money from the Alfano family 20 years prior.

Margaret explained that she was on her back and Lena was kicking her and punching her. She advised that she was trying to get away from Lena but Lena continued to attack her. Margaret state that her friend Shanna came outside and pushed Lena off her. Margaret then started to walk away, north on Greenwood Street. As she was walking she heard Lena's friend yell, "I told you there was going to be a problem." She stated that her friends Shanna and Angie met up with her and they walked to the police department together.

Margaret allowed me to photograph her right elbow which was scraped and bleeding, her leg which was red and scraped, and a large area of redness on her back. She stated that she assumed the mark on her back happened when she fell backwards onto the concrete. The pictures were later burnt to a disked and are enclosed with this file.

I asked Margaret if there were any witnesses to what transpired. She stated she could see people coming out of the bar and watching what was happening but she did not know any of them and could not described them due to concentrating on trying to get away from Lena. I could detect a faint odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from Margaret's breath.

I asked Margaret if she wanted to press charges and she confirmed she did. Margaret filled out a voluntary written statement which is enclosed. I advised Margaret that I would attempt to locate Lena and would follow up with her when I returned to work on Sunday.

Next, I spoke with Angie Cinotte who was waiting in the lobby for Margaret. Angie said that she did not see anything that happened but did see Margaret on the ground.

Shanna Cawley advised that she saw Lena start to push Margaret and cause a problem. She started to gather up her and Margaret's purses and phones and then went outside.

When she got outside she saw that Lena was on top of Margaret. Shanna advised she wrapped her arms around Lena and pulled her off of Margaret, which allowed Margaret to get up and start walking away. Shanna denied seeing Lena actually kick or punch Margaret due to being inside collecting their belongings. Shanna filled out a voluntary written statement which is enclosed.

Officer Rios and I went to Jack's Place. I went inside and was approached by three people who state that they witnessed what happened. I requested that Destiny Hill, Cameron Savage, and Mackenzie Zywica come outside to speak with me.

Destiny Hill advised that she was inside and saw Lena yelling at Margaret and Margaret "trying to get away from her." Destiny stated that she did not see Lena pushing Margaret but a few moments later, Margaret was on the ground outside and Lena was on top of her. I asked Destiny if she saw either person kicking or punching the other and she said no but it looked like Margaret was trying to get out from underneath Lena but Lena would not let her.

Next I spoke with Cameron Savage. Cameron state that he was entering the bar. Before he got to the door it opened and he saw Lena pushing Margaret backwards. Both women hit into him as they passed him. Cameron stated he looked back and saw Margaret was on the ground on her back and Lena was on top of her.

Finally, I spoke with Mackenzie Zywica. She stated that she was entering the bar with Cameron. Lena and Margaret also bumped into her. Lena pushed Margaret to the ground and got on top of her. MacKenzie added that Margaret was yelling for Lena to stop and Lena was yelling at her. Shanna then came out of the bar and pulled Lena off of Margaret. Margaret got up and started walking north on Greenwood Street.

I gave Mackinzie, Cameron, and Destine Voluntary written statements. I requested that they fill them out and bring them to the police department when they were finished.

I went inside and spoke with Tyler Thompson who was bartending. I asked him if he saw anything between Margaret and Lena and he said no. I asked if Lena was still there and he attempted to locate her but was unsuccessful. I went outside and located Lena who was standing outside.

I asked Lena if she was willing to come to the police department to talk about what happened and she said no but she would talk to me. Lena explained that she saw Margaret and 17 years ago Margaret's husband stole 1.7 million dollars from her family. As I spoke with Lena she was holding a beer, swaying back and forth, and I could smell a strong odor of alcohol emitting from her breath. She stated that her friend, Andrea, came up to Lena and told Lena that Margaret said something rude to her. At this time Lena time Lena threw up her hands into the air and yelled "So I kicked her ass, I admit it. Take me to Jail." I advised Lena that she was under arrest for Battery. She was handcuffed, searched (no contraband found), and placed in the rear of my caged squad car.

While Lena and I were en route to post she repeated multiple times that she kicked Margaret's ass because her husband stole from her family and insulted Andrea. Lena also said multiple times that the bond money was worth being able to beat Margaret up and that she will continue to beat her up anytime she sees her and that she does not care if she gets arrested again. At posed, Lena was placed in the Booking Room.

I brought Lena to the Interview Room and began reading her her Miranda Rights. Lena initialed the first box and told me that she would not initial anything else. She stated she did not want to talk to me and wanted an attorney. I brought Lena back to the Booking Room. Officer Garland processed Lena. Lena's husband, Frank, arrived and provided the $120.00 for Lena's bond.

I advised Lena of her mandatory Bureau County court date of June 22, 2018 at 1:00 A.M. Lena was issued her copy of the citation and left with Frank.

The bond money was placed in the bond box.

Officer Pelligrini will follow up with the owner of Jack's Place, Eric Verucchi and attempt to surveillance footage from the bar.
