City of Princeton issued the following announcement on Sept. 14.
Recently, many of you have been following an ongoing dispute on Facebook involving a former Princeton Police Department employee who retired on July 1, 2012. The crux of this dispute is a less than an amicable breakup of a romantic relationship having nothing to do with the Princeton Police Department. Several parties, many hiding behind false accounts, have made posts disparaging the Princeton Police Department. None of them are based upon fact.
I have been the chief in Princeton for almost five months now. I am impressed with the community support, partnerships and involvement I have experienced in my brief time here. I know the informed, educated citizens of Princeton do not subscribe to the belief that our department is corrupt. However, they too have expressed their displeasure to me over the rantings of people who are content to hide behind their keyboard and false accounts to espouse their misguided, misinformed ramblings.
I am a big believer in transparency. If there is wrongdoing to be discovered then, by all means, I want to find it. I have nearly 25 years of experience in law enforcement. I have investigated police misconduct on several occasions, going so far as to arrest police officers for breaking the law. I hold myself, and the officers of the Princeton Police Department, to a very high standard. If you want to challenge our integrity you had better have some evidence to back up your claim. If you don't, and you slander this department with statements we can prove untrue, then we will take every legal means necessary to defend our reputation.
If the former employee who is participating in this juvenile exchange participated in any wrongdoing during his tenure, I will see to it that it is investigated thoroughly. If that means having an uninvolved third party conduct the investigation I will totally support it.
I am proud of the men and women who currently work for the Princeton Police Department. There are also many honorably retired employees who are disappointed by the recently posted messages slandering the department they proudly worked for. It is for their sake that I challenge who ever believes they have evidence of corruption to bring it forward. If you are basing your accusations off of rumor and innuendo then shame on you. I await your response.
