ILLINOIS VALLEY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL: How to Reduce Your Daily Sugar Intake

Sugar

Illinois Valley Community Hospital issued the following announcement on Oct. 25.

Want to cut back on the amount of added sugars in your diet? Here are some tips to get you started:

Swap out soda and other sweetened drinks with sugar-free or low-calorie beverages. Water is always the best choice!

Compare food labels and choose products with the lowest amounts of added sugars. Look at the ingredient list to determine if sugars are added or natural. It is best if no sugar is listed but if it is look for it to be one of the last ingredients.

Ditch the table sugar. This includes white or brown sugar, honey, molasses, and syrup. Try cutting the usual amount of sugar you add to recipes by one-third to one-half.

Add fruit. Instead of adding sugar or honey to cereal or oatmeal, try fresh fruit or unsweetened dried fruit. You can also substitute unsweetened applesauce in recipes (use equal amounts).

Try extracts or spices. Flavor your applesauce with cinnamon. Add extracts like almond, vanilla or lemon to recipes. Experiment with ginger, allspice, or nutmeg.

Eat fresh, frozen, dried or canned fruits. Looks for fruit canned in water or 100% juice. Make sure your dried fruit is unsweetened.
