Princeton Chamber Of Commerce issued the following announcement on Feb. 27.
United Way of Greater Mercer County (UWGMC) will host the 5th annual Strike Out Hunger community meal packing event on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, from 10 am to 12 pm at The College of New Jersey.
Strike Out Hunger is a community-driven initiative that unites businesses, individuals and advocates to alleviate hunger in Mercer County. Strike Out Hunger provides packaged meals to food pantries during the summer time. During the summer, access to food becomes scarce for children and families in the community. New for 2019, UWGMC will introduce fresh produce to promote nutrition and healthy eating. Many vulnerable populations, unfortunately, have very little access to fruit and vegetables.
All proceeds from sponsorships and grants cover the cost to purchase meals. UWGMC is working with Meals of Hope, Rolling Harvest Food Rescue, and Mercer Street Friends to provide meals. The meals will benefit pantries and meal programs in Mercer County.
Sponsors for this year’s community meal packing event include Horizon NJ Health, NJM Insurance Group, M&T Bank and Investors Bank. The planning committee for the event has representatives from companies and nonprofits: Cashel Faherty Public Relations, Grounds For Sculpture, Horizon NJ Health, Investors Bank, Jewish Family and Children’s Service, M&T Bank, Mercer Street Friends, NJM Insurance Group, Northfield Bank, PNC Bank, Present Company, Princeton University, Princetonian Graphics, Rolling Harvest Food Rescue, SL Business and The College of New Jersey.
The Strike Out Hunger community meal packing event is part of the United Way Worldwide Day of Action. United Ways across the country and around the world host volunteer events that bring awareness to pressing issues and help solve common concerns in our communities. Day of Action events also meet the Corporate Social Responsibility goals of many local corporations, allowing them to strengthen their teams while doing good for the community in which they work.
