The price of local government in 2017: City of Ottawa

The City of Ottawa budget was $48.46 million for its 2017 fiscal year, or $5,911 per household.

That's an increase of 17.8 percent from 2016, when the city spent $41.14 million, or $5,017 per household.

Ottawa has 8,199 households and a population of 18,289.

Since 2001, the City of Ottawa budget has grown by 48.6 percent, from $32.61 million. The city population has grown 4.5 percent over the same period, from 17,500.

Salaries accounted for 20.2 percent of city spending in 2017. Ottawa property taxpayers paid $9.78 million for 127 full-time employees and 34 part-time employees.

In 2001, the city had 110 full-time employees and 14 part-time employees, and spent $6.66 million.
