Gardner S Wilmington Township High School District 73 Board of Education met May 15.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

PUBLIC COMMENT:

Audience: Mr. Michael Barber asked to speak to the board members in closed session.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT: Mr. Engelman presented on the following:

 Student of the Year – There were 80 students that received at least 1 vote from teachers / staff, and those students were rewarded with an ice cream party in the GSW café. Winners were then announced on April 25 at the Academic Awards Ceremony.

 Field Trips:

o Thursday, May 9th students with Straight A’s and Perfect Attendance attend a play, West Side Story, at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. 66 total students were invited, with 51 attending.

o Friday, May 10th Science classes took 35 students to The Field Museum in Chicago.

 Manufacturer’s Tour – GSW Math teachers, Physics teacher and GSW Principal along with other representatives from the three other county high school districts went on this bus tour to Grundy County Manufacturers. The idea is to inform students that there are good career in Grundy County in a number of different fields.

 Academics Awards Night – was held on April 25th

 RVC Scholar Athlete – GSW student Jaylon Sims was the 2019 recipient and received a $500 scholarship.

 Principal Engelman and Supt. Perrott have attended a few Safety Meetings with the Grundy County Police Department discussing school safety planning.

 GSW held a safety drill with the Grundy Count Police department, practicing procedures involving an intruder / active shooter in the building.

 Abigail Cash – going to State Track meet for the 200 m dash

 Grant Olsen and Camron Carpenter – going to State IHSA Bass Fishing Tournament

BOARD CONFERENCE: The Board discussed the Annual Conference that is held in November in Chicago. Mr. Perrott stated that they need to commit now in order to get Housing Selection. Board members discussed arrangement, who will be attending, and other specifics.

YEARBOOK CONFERENCE / TRAINING: Mrs. Susan Heerdt, Student Publications teacher, and two of her students, will be attending a professional development and designing of yearbook session. This is a 2-day conference, which involves an overnight stay. There is a full day of technology, which will be very beneficial to both teacher and students.

SPORT CO-OP INTERGOVERNMENTAL AGREEMENTS: The board reviewed past agreements with both Dwight High School and Reed-Custer High School. Currently, GSW co-ops several sports with Dwight and only Boys & Girls Soccer with Reed-Custer. Mr. Perrott informed the board that Dwight is reviewing their current agreement and will be updating it, removing football, and may be reviewing the financial support for coaching stipends and transportation fees.

BOYS BASKETBALL SUMMER TRIP: Mr. Wills, Varsity Boys Basketball Coach, will be taking the team to Wisconsin Dells this summer to participate in a tournament, which involves 2-nights stay. This trip has been taken for the last several years.

INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES EDUCATION ACT DETERMINATION: Mr. Perrott informed the board that GSW High School has met all requirements.

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING – JJC: This is a “data collection” agreement with JJC and the other school districts within the Joliet Junior College district.

OTHER ITEMS: None at this time.

OLD BUSINESS: Mr. Perrott presented on the following:

 Building Projects

o A Building and Grounds meeting was held to discuss summer projects o Finish up 1st floor hallways

o PE Locker Rooms and offices

o HVAC in the PE locker rooms and offices

o Summer workers – 1 crew leader and 4 workers.

 Hand-Held Radios: Mr. Perrott is looking into purchasing these radios for GSW HS. Braceville Grade School has purchased 6 and GSW would need 25-30 for GSW to be fully equipped.

BOARD OF EDUCATION REQUESTS:

-Board member, Cindy Gerber, asked about Kimberly McDaniel winning 1st at State for GAVC Graphic Design -There was a question about the Consent Agenda / Agenda format.

-There was a question about the Sharon Sovey event at Gardner Grade School and if it would be excused.
