ILLINOIS VALLEY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL: IVCH Tai Chi Classes Moving to Illinois Valley YMCA

Taichi

Illinois Valley Community Hospital issued the following announcement on Jan. 4.

A popular tai chi class sponsored by Illinois Valley Community Hospital that met twice weekly in a room at Peru Mall for almost 20 years is moving to the Illinois Valley YMCA.

The class—offered free of charge by IVCH as a community service—will start meeting at the Illinois Valley Y in Peru at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 7, and then meet every Tuesday and Thursday thereafter.

The last tai chi session at Peru Mall will be Thursday, December 19. The class is leaving the mall because of the expiration of the hospital’s contract for space there.

“Tai chi is a low-impact exercise program that is very popular with older adults. Our classes usually have 60 to 80 participants per session. That’s why we’re happy we can continue them at the Y.” said Joan Fernandez, IVCH director of community relations and marketing.

Dave Potthoff, YMCA chief executive officer, said IVCH tai chi participants will not have to be Y members to attend the class at its new location. Class sessions will continue to be taught by IVCH staff.

“We are very grateful to the YMCA for offering us the space to continue our tai chi program,” said Fernandez. “The hospital’s tai chi classes have developed quite a devoted following through the years and we’re delighted we can keep them going”
