Illinois residents with a driver’s license or identification expiring in March have been granted an extension with the closure of driver’s service offices.
Those with expiring IDs in addition to vehicle registrations and other business associated with the office have been granted a 30-day extension.
The announcement is part of an effort to help slow the spread of coronavirus. State offices closed March 17.
Many transactions can be made online with the Secretary of State’s office. Illinois residents are encouraged to visit www.cyberdriveillinois.com. Services include duplication of a license or ID and renewal of vehicle registration.
The state will join others in requesting the Department of Homeland Security to delay the Oct. 1 deadline for the Federal REAL ID program. The state is citing complications brought about by COVID-19. REAL IDs will be needed to fly domestically or visit military bases.
