Bureau Valley District #340 Board of Education met January 21

Bureau Valley District #340 Board of Education met Jan. 21.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

President Yepsen called the bond hearing to order at 6:00 pm and directed the Secretary to call the roll.

ROLL CALL

PRESENT: Dye, Johnson, Olds, Spencer, Wiggim, Yepsen

ABSENT: Maynard

The public hearing was in regard to the intent of the Board of Education of the District to sell $1,850,000 in working cash fund bonds. There were no public comments. There were no comments from the Board. No written comments were submitted. Yepsen announced that all persons desiring to be heard had been given an opportunity to present oral and written testimony with respect to the proposed issuance of the working cash fund bonds.

It was moved by Olds and seconded by Johnson to adjourn the hearing at 6:05pm.

Determining that a quorum was present, President Yepsen then called the regular meeting to order at 6:05 pm and directed the Secretary to call the roll.

ABSENT: Maynard

There was no public comment.

It was moved by Spencer and seconded by Olds to enter into executive session at 6:10 p.m. for the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity, or Student disciplinary cases and other matters related to individual students; and Discussion of minutes of meetings lawfully closed under the Open Meetings Act, whether for purposes of approval by the body of the minutes or semi-annual review of the minutes.

VOICE VOTE             MOTION CARRIED

It was moved by Johnson and seconded by Dye to close the executive session at 6:30 p.m. and return to open session.

ROLL CALL IN OPEN SESSION

PRESENT: Dye, Johnson, Olds, Spencer, Wiggim, Yepsen 

ABSENT: Maynard

During Building Reports, Mr. Duane Price, BVHS Principal, reported that students from Bradford had visited and that he and Aimee Stoller, would be visiting Bradford Grade School soon. Kristie Cady, BVN/BVW Principal, thanked Officer Cliff Morse for working with our students in the D.A.R.E. program. Mrs. Cady also mentioned that a production of “Judy Moody” will be presented at BVHS on February 5th and in the cast is BV Alumni Frank Monier. Julie Decker-Platz, BV Elementary/JH Principal, thanked the BV Foundation for purchasing a TV for the foyer. She thanked Josh Bell for his help installing the TV and Nick Hartz’s computer class for placing the menus and announcements on the TV. Josh Bell, Technology Director, stated he was happy to report that there was no damage after the power outages.

It was moved by Olds and seconded by Wiggim to approve the consent agenda items:

3. Monthly Financial and Treasurer’s Reports

MOTION CARRIED 6-0-1 Absent

Fuel bids were opened on January 16th. Jason Stabler explained that the district requested 6 month prices and 12 month prices. The 6 month price was less than the 12 month price. He recommended the board accept the bid from AgView FS and let bids in 6 months. Justin Yepsen was concerned that only one bid was received. Matt Wiggim suggested that Glenda Klingenberg, Transportation Director, visit the local businesses that provide fuel to inquire as to why bids aren’t being submitted. Tiffany Johnson asked when the current bid expired. The current bid is done at the end of January. It was moved by Wiggim and seconded by Spencer to approve the transportation fuel bid of AgView FS for 6 months as presented.

MOTION CARRIED 6-0-1 Absent

Mr. Price presented proposed changes to the 2020-2021 Curriculum Guide for the high school. Staff members submitted suggestions and Heather Foster compiled the suggestions. Aimee Stoller, Guidance Counselor, and Mr. Price are cleaning up the language in the guide. Mr. Price thanked Mrs. Foster and Mrs. Stoller for their help. Four courses are being removed from the Guide, due to duplication. Three courses are being added: Adaptive Physical Education (for students with special needs), Advanced Biology Honors, and Honors Statistics. The Biology and Statistics courses are both dual credit classes through Sauk Valley Community College, offering 4 credit hours and 3 credit hours, respectively. Mr. Price feels these new courses help us meet our students’ needs. It was moved by Olds and seconded by Dye to approve the 2020-2021 High School Curriculum Guide as presented.

Mr. Stabler explained that the School Maintenance Project Grant could result in receiving up to $50,000. The plan is for this money to offset the cost of a new chiller at the high school. The timing of installation is being decided. Most likely, the chiller could not be ready for graduation, so replacement will probably take place in June. It was moved by Johnson and seconded by Wiggim to approve application for the School Maintenance Project Grant as presented.

Justin Yepsen gave an update on the construction project. There is one company left to pay. There will be a little money in contingency. Some work on the courtyard doors is required, so that can come from the contingency.

It was moved by Olds and seconded by Wiggim to approve disposal of Verbatim Executive Session Recordings prior to July 2018.

It was moved by Johnson and seconded by Spencer to approve and retain the executive session meeting minutes of December 16, 2019.

It was moved by Olds and seconded by Wiggim to approve employment of Kary VanDeVoorde as BVHS Custodian and Abby Jaques as BVHS Fresh/Soph Softball Coach.

It was moved by Olds and seconded by Wiggim to approve the following Volunteer

Coaches: BVHS Dance - Debbie Higgins; BVHS Football - Austin Sensenig, BVHS Baseball – Joe York and BVHS Softball – Tim Catton.

It was moved by Johnson and seconded by Dye to adjourn the meeting at 7:05 p.m.
