Bureau Valley Community Unified School District 340 Board of Education met May 18.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

Determining that a quorum was present, President Yepsen called the regular meeting to order at 6:00 pm and directed the Secretary to call the roll.

ROLL CALL

PRESENT IN PERSON: Dye, Maynard, Yepsen

PRESENT VIA REMOTE CONNECTION: Johnson, Spencer, Wiggim

ABSENT: Olds

Mr. Stabler recognized the Transportation Department and Mr. Anderson for the Bus 2020 Video. This was a nice tribute for our graduates. He also thanked our Food Service Department for serving over 25,000 meals since the school closure began. He recognized the Custodial Staff for deep cleaning and keeping us all safe. He thanked the volunteers who have helped with materials and learning packet preparation and Graduation. Lastly, he congratulated the Class of 2020 and our 8th Grade students. Mr. Justin Yepsen thanked the staff and gave a final thank you to Doyle Johnston and Vicki Litherland. He wished them well in their retirement.

There was no public comment.

It was moved by Johnson and seconded by Maynard to enter into executive session at 6:10 p.m. for the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity, or Student disciplinary cases and other matters related to individual students; and Discussion of minutes of meetings lawfully closed under the Open Meetings Act, whether for purposes of approval by the body of the minutes or semi-annual review of the minutes.

During Building Reports, Mr. Duane Price, BVHS Principal, reported that 65 seniors participated in the drive through graduation. He also mentioned that Ag Teacher, Caseelynn Johnston received a $3000 grant from Compeer Financial for the Ag Department. Mrs. Kristie Cady, BVN/W Principal, reported that she is working on a way to honor and celebrate her retirees. Mrs. Julie Decker-Platz, BV E/JH Principal, thanked Bret Jamison for his help with virtual 8th grade celebration videos. The Technology department thanked Mrs. Haley for helping with the 6th grade tour video. Mrs. Vicki Litherland, BVHS Athletic Director, reported that she and Mr. Brad Bickett have been working together to make the transition in that department. Mr. Bickett also mentioned that he is in the early stages of looking at a track resurfacing project. Mrs. Brianne DeBrock, BV JH Athletic Director, reported that the IESA plans to make a decision on fall sports in mid-July. Mrs. Sheri Litherland, BV Curriculum Director, reported that Valley is one of the 2020 Corn Belt Energy Education Grant Recipients. Also, for the second year in a row, Bureau Valley Manlius Elementary was selected as Illinois Elementary School of the Year by the Energizing Student Potential Program.

It was moved by Maynard and seconded by Dye to approve the consent agenda items:

1. Regular Meeting Minutes of April 20, 2020

2. Activity Account Reports

3. Monthly Financial and Treasurer’s Reports

4. Bureau Valley #340 Bills and Payroll

5. Addition of BV JH Activity Account for JFL

6. Closure of BV Elementary Activity Accounts due to inactivity (Flower Fund and Music Resale)

MOTION CARRIED 6-0-1 Absent

The Tentative Budget Amendment for FY20 was presented. Mr. Stabler explained that on the revenue side, the district added working cash funds. Also, two categorical payments have not been received. Rita Hanna, Bookkeeper, mentioned that the Transportation Fund is very low because we have not received one state payment. It was moved by Dye and seconded by Spencer to approve the FY20 Tentative Budget Amendment as presented.

Updates to the K-5 and 6-12 handbooks were presented. Mr. Stabler thanked the principals and their committees for their hard work on this project. It was moved by Maynard and seconded by Dye to approve K-5 and 6-12 2020-2021 Handbooks as presented.

In other business, Mr. Yepsen inquired about the high school chiller project. Mr. Stabler reported that the company has been in to look over things. They estimate that the project will be completed by the 3rd week of June. Mr. Yepsen is concerned about the deterioration of our parking lots. More information will be collected. Mr. Yepsen would like to see the ag building project move forward as well. The Ag Booster group is willing to help with this project.

It was moved by Johnson and seconded by Dye to approve and retain the executive session meeting minutes of April 20, 2020.

It was moved by Maynard and seconded by Dye to approve the retirement notices of the following people at the end of the 2023-2024 school year: Brad Bickett, Jennifer DeBrock, Brian Humphrey and Craig Johnson; resignations of Brad Bickett as BVHS Sophomore Class Sponsor, Tina Hufford and Laura Nichols as BVHS Renaissance Sponsors, Sheri Thacker as BV JH 7th grade Volleyball Coach, Adriana Blanford as BVN Teacher and Darcy Kepner as BV JH Girls Softball Coach.

It was moved by Spencer and seconded by Dye to approve employment of Abby Jaques as BVHS PE/Health Teacher for the 20-21 school year, transfer of Lucas Schultz from BVHS Freshman Class Sponsor to Sophomore Class Sponsor, employment of Caseelynn Johnston as Freshman Class Sponsor, employment of Amanda Alm as BVHS Cafeteria Staff and the transfer of Courtney Borowski from BV Wyanet Kindergarten to 2nd grade teacher.

VOICE VOTE MOTION CARRIED

It was moved by Maynard and seconded by Johnson to approve maternity leave requests of Brianne DeBrock and Laura Nichols.
