City of La Salle Streets, Alleys and Traffic Committee met Sept. 8.

Here is the minutes provided by the committee:

Chairman Bacidore called the meeting to order at 6:22 p.m.

Present- Chairman Bacidore, Alderman Ptak, Alderman Reynolds, Alderman Lavieri, Alderman Jeppson, Alderman Crane

Absent- Alderman Herndon

Others Present: Alderman Demes, City Engineer Brian Brown, Director of Public Works Jeff Bumgarner, Police Chief Mike Smudzinski, Deputy City Clerk Brent Bader

A quorum was present.

The minutes of the Streets, Alleys and Traffic Committee held on August 24, 2020 were unanimously approved by the Committee after a motion from Alderman Reynolds and a second from Alderman Ptak.

Chairman Bacidore opened the meeting to discuss recommendations regarding trespassers attempting to access Prairie Lake through private property. Bacidore said additional signage followed up by police writing tickets for trespassers should discourage any trespassing. The aldermen discussed what the signs should say and settled on “No Park Access. No Motorized vehicles.” Signs were recommended to be placed at the trailhead at the Vermilionvue subdivision, the dead end on 24th Street, the Wastewater treatment plant, and near John Pohar & Sons on Crosat Street.

The Committee reviewed two requests for a stop sign at 10th and Wright streets from residents who said traffic goes too fast, nearing speeds of 65mph in the area. Alderman Jeppson noted there is already a stop sign at Ninth and 11th streets making it unlikely a vehicle can get up to that speed in two blocks. Bacidore explained the resident said they come over 11th Street from Bucklin but he explained to her why they can’t place a stop sign at every block. The Committee unanimously voted to recommend a stop sign not be added at the intersection.

The committee discussed painting corners on Crosat and LaHarpe streets, south of Fifth Street, to deter parking too close to intersections. City Engineer Brian Brown said state law doesn’t allow parking closer than 10 feet from a stop sign and Police Chief Mike Smudzinski said vehicles can’t park closer than 20 feet from a crosswalk without a stop sign. Reynolds said he’s seen many cars parking too close. Lavieri asked why not just have police write tickets for the drivers unless the paint is meant to act as a reminder. Brown advised that complaints can be made to him or, more directly, to police to address when they occur.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:31 p.m.
