CITY OF PRINCETON: Frozen Pipe Advisory

Frozenpipe

City of Princeton issued the following announcement on Feb. 5.

City of Princeton Water Department – Frozen Pipe Advisory:

Please be advised that the upcoming weather forecast is predicting extremely cold temperatures in our area. These temperatures are expected to be well below 0°F.

Property owners are advised to check for any freezing pipe and meter conditions they may have. Owners are responsible for maintaining the areas around the water meters, to keep them from freezing. Frozen and burst pipes are expensive to fix and can cause costly water damage. Simple tips to help prevent pipes from freezing:

 When temperatures are below freezing, you can leave a cold water tap running slowly at a steady stream (approximate diameter of pencil lead). Ensure the drain is kept clear of debris and is working properly.

 Leave cupboard doors under your kitchen and bathroom sink open if piping is located next to exterior walls.

 Do not set your furnace below 55°F at night or when the house is vacant.

 Shut off and drain the pipes leading to outside spigots.

 Wrap foam pipe insulation around pipes most prone to freezing. For example, pipes near outside walls, crawlspaces, attics, and garages.

 Seal air leaks in your home and garage, especially in areas where pipes are located.

 If you own a mobile home inspect the skirting panels around the unit. Checking for any broken or missing panels.

 Inspect any heat tape that could be installed.

 If you are away, have someone check your property regularly.

Also, take this time to identify your main shutoff valve; this valve will be inside and located near the water meter. In an emergency you can use this valve to shut the water supply off. If your pipes do freeze it is best to contact a licensed plumber. A plumber can determine where the frozen pipe is within the home and thaw it out accordingly.
