State Rep. Tom Demmer is warning his fellow Illinois Republicans about the upcoming COVID-19 relief package, saying not to be complacent about it and not be tempted to use it for anything other than to help Illinois residents in need of aid.
Demmer wrote a statement posted on his website and published in the Chicago Tribune which revealed his thoughts on the $1.9 trillion relief package that was designed by Democrats to help curb the pandemic and help people in need of financial aid.
He said that this relief package could easily be used as a “bureaucracy bailout” that would sink the state of Illinois into more debt. He said that Illinois will get $13.2 billion from the package and $7.5 billion of that total will go to the state while cities and counties will get $5.7 billion.
Demmer then said that the huge amount of money coming into Illinois could tempt some politicians to do away with budget restraints.
He said that the money coming in should be used for Illinois residents who have been suffering from the pandemic.
He said the people who lost their jobs because businesses had to close down and the business owners who lost their primary source of income because their shops had to halt operations are the ones who should receive the bulk of that relief package and not the politicians.
