CITY OF OGLESBY: Hiring For A Director Of Park and Recreation

City of Oglesby issued the following announcement on Mar. 4. 

To direct, plan, manage and review the activities and operations of the Parks and Recreation Department; to coordinate assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies; responsible for all landscape maintenance of all Parks and City facilities; and to provide highly responsible administrative support to the Parks Commissioner, Park Board and the Mayor’s office

Supervision is exercised over the park maintenance staff, swimming pool staff, and other part-time or seasonal personnel.  

• Select, supervise, and train staff, handle employee concerns and problems, assign work, and recommend disciplinary and other personnel actions.  This may include up to 30+ seasonal (park, recreation and pool) and 25 volunteer positions.

• Administer all operations, activities and policies of the Parks and Recreation Department.

• Direct the acquisition, planning, design/construction and maintenance of recreation equipment and park buildings, facilities and grounds.

• Plan/direct renovation or construction improvements projects; Coordinate departmental work/projects among applicable government department/agencies, outside services and contractors, consult architects /engineers, and obtain bids for such work/projects.

• Monitor the City’s parks to assess development and necessary maintenance.

• Develop, promote and organize a variety of recreational programs; work with local organizations to determine recreational interests/needs; oversee scheduling of athletic facilities with community recreation groups (which includes Oglesby Youth Baseball and Softball Leagues, Oglesby Public Schools, LaSalle - Peru Youth Football League, Illinois Valley Community College Baseball team, La Salle-Peru Township High School baseball team, local travel ball teams, and Illinois Valley Youth Soccer League); maintain schedules/records of use of City’s parks and recreation facilities (includes scheduling meetings and events at the Dickinson House).

• Establish and recommend fees for recreation programs where applicable.

• Maintain financial operations of Parks and Recreation Department to insure fiscal responsibility.

• Direct departmental public relations, marketing and promotions, communicate and publicize the availability of facilities and recreation programs.  This includes updates to the city website and attending annual Safety and Health fair at Lincoln School.

• Attend meetings, seminars, etc. as directed or as appropriate. This includes being city liaison to the Dickinson Foundation board of directors, attending and preparing agenda items for the Park Board meetings, along with Oglesby baseball/softball coaches meeting each spring.

• Maintain inventory of departmental materials, equipment, and supplies; initiate orders for new or replacement materials.

• Receive various documentation (public relations materials, reports, correspondence, invoices, etc.) analyze, edit, and/or approve: respond/forward as appropriate.

• Prepare and/or generate routine correspondence, letters, memoranda, forms, reports and other documents via computer.

• Respond to routine requests for information from officials, employees, members of the staff, the public or other individuals.

• Answer the telephone; provide information; return calls as necessary.

• Use knowledge of various software programs to operate a computer in an effective and efficient manner.

• Maintain professional affiliations (includes Illinois Park and Recreation Association and Illinois Sports Turf Managers Association).  Attend workshops and training sessions as appropriate (Certified Public Applicator License for turf, right of way and/or mosquito with Department of Agriculture)

• Schedule and run various activities throughout the year, such as sports tournaments, BB Gun-Basketball Banquet, Mayor’s Baseball Parade, Halloween parade (portion of Harvest Fest), and help with City Christmas event.

• Supervise and perform maintenance of City parks, open space and City owned property.  Maintenance includes cutting grass, trimming bushes and trees, cleaning and maintaining bathrooms, weed and mosquito control, litter and trash removal, ball diamond maintenance, ground snow removal, leaf removal, painting, repair and replacement of equipment and all other general outdoor maintenance. 

• Coordinate and supervise recreation programs throughout the year.  These include youth tennis lessons, fun and fitness camp, youth bowling clinic, cheers and chants cheer camp, girl’s and boy’s basketball camps, youth volleyball camp, fundamentals baseball clinic, REC basketball league, BB Gun Club, and Rising Stars basketball fundamentals program.

• Provide summer recreation equipment for picnics (volleyball, horseshoes, bags, etc.).

• Provide Santa Claus suits to interested parties during holiday season.

• Set up voting booths at 5 precincts during elections.

• Display flags around Memorial Park and Walnut Street on flag holidays.

• Maintain all city flags on city owned facilities.
