State Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) has received documents sought under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) regarding the COVID-19 outbreak at the Illinois Veterans’ Home in LaSalle that took the lives of 36 veterans.
“LaSalle Veterans' Home FOIA received finally, over 2,300 documents were sent from Governor's office,” Rezin announced on Facebook. “I'm spending the weekend with staff to go through it to see why this outbreak was allowed to spread through the entire Home. Why did it take the Dept. of Public Health 12 days to do an on-site visit? We need answers.”
Rezin sought documents to determine the responsibilities of those overseeing the Illinois Department of Public Health, The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Veterans’ Home at LaSalle, and all written and electronic documents mentioning COVID-19 addressed to and/or from the Illinois Veterans’ Home at LaSalle dated from Oct. 1, 2020 to Nov. 30, 2020, according to a statement she released on her website.
In addition to taking the lives of 36 veterans, the outbreak at the state-run facility infected 90 percent of the residents.
