Sen. Sue Rezin encouraged the community to support police officers as she spoke after the 2021 Illinois Police Officers Memorial ceremony on May 6.
She pointed out how ceremonies unify people of different perspectives.
“It’s incredibly humbling to see the ceremony that’s honoring the men and women who have given their lives in the line of duty,” Rezin said. “Oftentimes, we get caught up in the legislative process and the political infighting that many people see on TV, and you know, it takes a ceremony such as we just witnessed to bring everyone together and realize that we’re all in it together and we need to support the people who protect us, the men and women of the police force that are out there putting their lives on the line each and every day for our safety.”
Rezin recently made a Senate Floor Amendment to Senate Bill 1410 which would revise the Fire Protection District Act.
“This legislation entitles fire protection districts to legal fees and court costs associated with pursuing real estate tax monies owed to them by municipalities due to those municipalities not making the statutory requirements real estate tax payments after the territories are annexed from the fire protection boundaries,” she explained.
he Senate Education Committee Minority spokesperson recently took to Facebook to urge people to oppose Senate Bill 818.
“The Senate Executive Committee recently approved Senate Bill 818 along party lines,” Rezin posted on Facebook. “This bill completely changes how sex education is taught to K – 12 students in Illinois. It also forces private schools to teach concepts that are contrary to their faith and would be unconstitutional forced speech. This proposal had over 1,500 opposition witness slips filed against it, including from the Illinois State Board of Education, Illinois Association of School Boards, Illinois Principals Association and the Illinois Coalition of Nonpublic Schools. If you OPPOSE these controversial standards, reach out to your legislator and tell them to vote NO on Senate Bill 818!”
State Sen. Dave Syverson (R-Rockford), like Rezin, opposes SB818. He was also at the memorial ceremony. Syverson furthered his support to the brave men and women by similarly recognizing the efforts of Rockford police officers during the National Police Week.
Rezin is a member of the National Conference of State Legislatures—a bipartisan organization bringing lawmakers and staff from across the nation to work together and share information that may help craft the best solutions to the challenges being faced by different states.
