Republican state Sen. Sue Rezin is looking to make sure residents are aware of upcoming park closures and that hunters know when they're allowed where.

"Hunters will be allowed at Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks during the upcoming deer hunting seasons, which means there will be park closures,” Rezin recently posted on Twitter.

Deer hunting will be allowed at Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks starting later this month and continuing through January, with State Parks Site Supt. Alvin Harper stressing there are distinctions for hunters using bows and arrows and for those using guns.

To maintain order, not everyone will be allowed in at the same time, with archers being allowed first on a first come, first served basis. Hunters with guns were slotted based on a lottery, although can be put on a standby list on the day of.

The first round of closures are set for Nov. 19-21. All of Matthiessen State Park, the Hennepin Canyon parking lot at Starved Rock State Park, Starved Rock Nature Preserve, Mitchell’s Grove and the Sandy Ford and Margery C. Carlson areas will be closed. Most of Starved Rock State Park will stay open for the general public.

The other hunting seasons are slated for Dec. 1-5, Dec. 10-12, Dec. 30-Jan. 2, and Jan. 14-16, and dates can vary based on location.
