State Rep. Ryan Spain (R-Peoria) is reminding Illinois drivers to be careful as road construction increases with warmer weather.
"Construction season is starting up in Illinois and that means more equipment and workers out on the roadways," the legislator said in a recent Facebook post. "Keep yourself and road workers safe by remembering to slow down and stay alert in work zones."
Drivers can find out more about current road construction at this Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) website.
In a work zone safety fact sheet, IDOT offered a number of safety tips, including these: Drop the phone and drive; slow down in construction zones and obey speed limits; move over for workers whenever possible; pay attention to conditions; and remember that traffic backups can occur at any time.
Spain shared a link to an April 12 WBCU news report that quoted Illinois State Police Trooper Haylie Polistina, who reminded drivers to slow down and move over when they see law enforcement pulling a vehicle over. This action is required under legislation called Scott's Law.
"To date, our agency has had 10 squad cars struck as a result of Scott's Law violations," Polistina said. "And it is only April. In 2021, there were 22 Scott's Law-related crashes."
Drivers cited for work zone infractions face a minimum $250 fine for first offenses, the news report said. A second infraction could result in a $750 fine and 90-day drivers' license suspension.
