City of Ottawa Board of Fire and Police Commissioners met March 9.

Ken Brown called the meeting to order at 11:02 a.m. Public Comment

None.

Minutes

Fire Chief Andy Borkowski Deputy Fire Chief Brian Bressner Kim Czyz

Moved by Steve Malinsky second by Tim McTaggart, to approve the minutes of the February 24, 2022 meeting as written. All ayes. Motion passed.

Firefighter Hiring and Retention

Chief Borkowski advised the Board that he and Deputy Chief Bressner met with Mayor Aussem and Commissioner Less last week to discuss firefighter hiring and retention. A meeting will be scheduled in the very near future with the union to discuss possible changes to the current collective bargaining agreement in order to allow for modification to hiring requirements and possibly residency requirements.

Firefighter Hiring

Deputy Fire Chief Bressner provided the Board with the background investigation report on fire candidate Alejandro Flores. The Board has approved this report. Alejandro’s psychological evaluation is scheduled for March 24, 2022 at Stanard & Associates.

Police Hiring Status

Police candidates Osvaldo Landeros-Leon and Joshua Jabczynski have passed all pre-employment criteria and are cleared to schedule a start date. Kim will advise both candidates that they are cleared for hiring and should contact Captain Bangert.

New Business

Ken asked if anyone was interested in attending the IFPCA spring seminar. It was decided to pass on the spring seminar; possibly attend the fall seminar.

Chief Borkowski advised the Board that depending on the outcome of firefighter residency, the department may consider implementing a lateral transfer process in the future.
