Numerous first responders from around the state will be on the Western Illinois University-Macomb campus Wednesday-Friday, July 28-29 for an intensive three-day advanced active shooter incident management (AASIM) training hosted by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training & Standards Board Executive Institute (ILETSBEI) at WIU and the Illinois Fire Service Institute at the University of Illinois.
According to Eric Arnold, program director for the institute, the AAISM, which is Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) certification course (PER-353), is a 24-hour performance-level training designed to improve incident management in the event of an active shooter situation. The University Union Grand Ballroom will be transformed into hands-on training centers, classroom settings and a large scale exercise scenario.
"In the wake of recent tragedies in Buffalo, Uvalde, Highland Park and Indianapolis, along with many other incidents across the U.S., that have rocked our nation, law enforcement and emergency management personnel, along with civilian leaders, have to be ready for this situation, which we know can happen anywhere," Arnold said. "We're pleased to host this large-scale, hands-on operation at WIU. It's essential for our region, our state and our nation."
The three-day training will culminate Friday, July 29 in a large-scale capstone exercise. Elected officials, K-12 and college/university educators and the media may observe.
