Miller Township School District 210 Board met Aug. 17.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The regular meeting of the Board of Education, District #210 was called to order by Dan Mitchell, President at 6:32 P.M.

PRESENT: Long, Mitchell, Straith, Timmons, Witte

ABSENT: Atchley, Chapman

ALSO PRESENT: David Hermann, Interim Superintendent

Kristin Heredia, Principal

Michele Armstrong, Recording Secretary

Darald Nelson, Treasurer

VISITORS: Aaron Smith, Tracie Steider

Additions to the Agenda: Approve Hiring Special Needs Driver

The July 2022 Treasurer’s report was given with the following cash fund balances:

EDUCATION: $ 1,795,767.00 

IMRF: 133,131.97 

O & M: 196,704.56 

WORKING CASH: 9,591.51 

FIRE SAFETY 33,227.17 

BOND & INTEREST: 136,258.43 

TRANSPORTATION: 73,115.03 

TORT FUND 41,375.47

TOTAL FUND BALANCE: $ 2,419,171.14

Motion by Long, 2nd by Witte to approve the regular session of July 20, 2022, the July 2022 Treasurer’s Report and the August 2022 paysheet as presented.

Nays: 

Absent: Atchley, Chapman 

Motion carried: 5 – 0 

A thank you note from Lorraine Horsley was read, for flowers sent to her during her recovery. 

Superintendent Report:

Electric/HVAC Upgrade Update: The air conditioning units are in and working well. They are waiting on a part to complete the heating portion of the project.

Aaron Smith, Tracie Steider from Ottawa Savings Bank were present to discuss and answer questions from the Board regarding their bank and what they can offer the District if they would chose make them their depositor of funds.

Motion by Long, 2nd by Timmons make Ottawa Savings Bank the District’s depository of funds.

L.E.A.S.E. has assigned Kara Rutherford as the District’s new Special Education Coordinator.

A cleaning service, ”Two Gals & A Pail” were hired to help clean up after the summer construction and prepare the school for the start of the year.

Members were reminded that the Annual School Board Conference will be held November 18 – 20. 

Principal’s Report

There is a need for a teacher aide in the Kindergarten classroom.

Marseilles Elementary has an Art Teacher they have offered to share with Milton Pope.

Motion by Straith, 2nd by Witte to hire a part-time Art Teacher for the 2022 – 2023 school year.

A new program called the Purple Cord Program will be offered to Junior High Students. Students will accumulate work hours and will be rewarded by wearing a purple cord at graduation in the Spring.

There is still no candidates for the Music program.

The Class of 2021 and the Community Club have recently donated sideline chairs to be used in the gym for ball games and on the stage for graduation.

The Class of 2022 has donated automatic towel and soap dispensers to the school’s restrooms. Discussion was held on alternative ideas to hold a Holiday Music Program with no music teacher hired. Approve Tentative 2022 – 2023 Amended Budget & Set Budget Hearing Date 

Motion by Witte , 2nd by Long to approve the Tentative 2022 – 2023 Budget as presented and set a Public Hearing for September 21, 2022 at 6:30 PM.

Approve Letter of Intent to Retire

Motion by Straith, 2nd by Witte to approve the letter from Judi Gage, which states her intent to retire in four years.

Motion carried: 5 – 0

Approve Resignation of Lunchroom Supervisor 

Motion by Straith, 2nd by Timmons to except the resignation from Susan Conway as lunchroom supervisor, effective immediately.

Nays: 

Absent: Atchley, Chapman 

Motion carried: 5 – 0

Approve Hiring of Teacher Aide

Motion by Straith, 2nd by Timmons to hire Jamie Morales as a teacher aide for the 2022 - 2023 school year.

Nays: 

Absent: Atchley, Chapman 

Motion carried: 5 – 0

Approve Hiring of Special Needs Driver

Motion by Witte, 2nd by Straith to hire Tommy Lovett to transport special needs student C.C. between Step by Step Day Care and Wallace Grade School for the 2022 – 2023 school year.

Nays: 

Absent: Atchley, Chapman 

Motion carried: 5 – 0

Motion by Straith, 2nd by Long to enter into closed session at 7:45 P.M. for the purpose of discussing student concerns, personnel, and contracts.
