City of Ottawa Historic Preservation Commission met March 9

Here are the minutes provided by the commission: 

Present: Chris Hasty, Earle Lecki, Lorraine McCallister, Rich Mennecke, Chuck Stanley Tami Koppen (staff)

Absent: George Cary, Bob Eschbach, Paul Havelka, Mollie Perrot

Public Comment. No comments

Minutes. Moved by Lorraine McCallister that the minutes for OHPC meeting held on February 9, 2023 be approved. Second by Chris Hasty. All ayes. Motion passed.

Colonnade. No report

Brick Streets. No report

State Historical Society Grant. Chuck suggested the event/unveiling be July 4th versus Memorial Day since there is an event in the park on Memorial Day.

Jordan Block Sign. No report

Mark Twain Sign. Lorraine stated church is ok with sign being mounted to the building. Location of sign is still to be determined.

Local Landmark Ordinance. Chuck discussed adding additional designation category, i.e. Heritage Homes to the ordinance. Lorraine suggested the whole ordinance be reviewed.

CLG Grant – South Bluff. Tami reported grant has not been released yet.

Old Business.

Knuessl Building. Chuck suggested a National Register Plaque be installed on The Knuessl Building.

Tami stated downtown is an Historic District, why choose this building over another. Commission discussed a plaque program for the entire district. Plaques could be ordered in bulk at owner’s expense.

Will discuss further.

New Business.

611 Green Street is a vacant lot the east side historic district. Owner plans to build a duplex. Certificate of appropriateness will be on next months agenda.

620 Shabbona. Owners would like to replace wood siding with James Hardie product. Rich said it was a good product and looked original. Its likely owners will request a Certificate of appropriateness.
