State Rep. Ryan Spain recently took to social media to voice his displeasure with Democratic lawmakers’ actions in the House, saying that they were cherry-picking what was to be passed as the end of the session neared.
“Democrats passed dozens of their priorities through the House on what was supposed to be the final week of session,” Rep. Spain said in a Facebook post on May 23. “Noticeably absent from those bills were the comprehensive ethics reform measures needed to end corruption in Illinois. There is nothing stopping us from passing strong anti-corruption measures today. Let's get it done.”
Rep. Swain represents the people of the 73rd House District and has represented it since joining the Illinois General Assembly in 2017. Before that, he served on the Peoria City Council from 2007 to 2016.
He shared a link to a WTTW news article about the lawmakers’ return to Springfield, which said they are scheduled to appear in the capitol for a few days beginning on Wednesday. The report added that this could actually go to May 31. A budget has still not been voted on and the report added that once June hits it is harder to pass because it requires a supermajority vote instead of a simple majority vote. This needs to happen before the fiscal year ends in July.
The WTTC piece also pointed out that the General Assembly has advanced “dozens of bills” legislators are trying to get passed as the session is coming to a close. This includes HB2531 which would lead to the creation of an airport in Peotone; HB2862 would give protection to temp workers in a variety of facets like refusing an assignment that requires “crossing a picket line, and pay level guarantees for temporary workers on a job for more than 90 days; House Bill 2862 which establishes a literacy program through the Department of Education; HB 2243 is to Give the attorney general the ability to take legal action for price gouging of generic prescriptions; and HB213 and HB2954 involving victims of deep fakes and doxing having the ability to file civil suits.
