Liz Bishop, a candidate for the Illinois State House District 76, underscored the importance of acknowledging "the significant contributions of the Mexican-American community to our district and our nation," as Illinois residents celebrated Cinco de Mayo this past weekend. Bishop, who is set to compete against Democrat Amy Muriel Briel in the general election, also encouraged her constituents to "reflect on the strength and diversity that make our community great."
"As we celebrate this culturally rich holiday, let's take a moment to appreciate the significant contributions of the Mexican-American community to our district and our nation," said Bishop, according to Facebook. "Join me in enjoying the colorful parades, delicious food, and the wonderful traditions that make Cinco de Mayo a special celebration. Let's also reflect on the strength and diversity that make our community great. Have a safe and joyful Cinco de Mayo!"
Contrary to its observance in the United States, Cinco de Mayo is not a nationwide holiday in Mexico. As per History.com, it is "primarily observed in the state of Puebla, where Zaragoza’s unlikely victory occurred, although other parts of the country also take part in the celebration." The traditions that Mexicans may engage in during this day include recreations of the Battle of Puebla. However, for many, it remains an ordinary day since it's not a federal holiday and businesses stay open.

In America, awareness about Cinco de Mayo started gaining traction during the 1960s due to Chicano activists. Despite common misconceptions among Americans linking Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Independence Day, they are distinct celebrations. According to History.com, Mexico's Independence Day falls on September 16 each year.
The Battle of Puebla took place on May 6, 1862. Britannica.com notes that it was fought between French forces and Benito Juarez's army. The Mexican forces emerged victorious from this battle at Puebla—a fortified city that stood in the path of the French army’s march toward Mexico City—under General Ignacio Zaragoza's command. The French lost 1,000 men before retreating. However, when France attacked Puebla again in March 1863, many of its 300,000 defenders were sent to France. It wasn't until April 2, 1867—more than four years later—that Brigadier General Porfirio Diaz ended the French occupation and reclaimed Puebla for Mexico.
