A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City of Peru Finance Department on October 31, 2024. The request was made by us at the Illinois Valley Times, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The FOIA request specifically asked for records pertaining to city sales tax from January 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024. We requested a list of businesses that paid sales tax to the city during this period. The requested information includes the business name, business type, and the amount of sales tax paid by each business.
In addition to this, we also asked for the total amount of sales tax that the city collected during this period. This information is crucial in understanding the financial dynamics of our local economy and will help provide transparency about how much revenue is generated from local businesses through sales tax.
As a media organization, we believe in holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Access to public records such as these is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. Given our role in disseminating information, we have also asked for a fee waiver as a media professional.
We await a response from the City of Peru Finance Department and will continue our efforts to bring accurate and relevant news to our readers.
