A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Peru City Council in Illinois on October 15, 2024. The request was made by us at the Illinois Valley Times, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our pursuit of transparency and accountability, we requested specific records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. The information sought includes a list of all council members with their respective names, titles, years of appointment, term lengths (2 or 4 years), and term expiry dates.
As a media organization, we underscored the importance of access to public records in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
Given our role in disseminating information to the public, we also expressed our belief that we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional. We await the response from the Peru City Council and look forward to sharing this information with our readers in due course.
