City of Peru City Council met Oct. 7

Here are the minutes provided by the council:

A regular meeting of the Peru City Council was called to order by Mayor Ken Kolowski in the Peru City Council Chambers on Monday, October 7, 2024, at 7:00 P.M.

City Clerk Dave Bartley called the roll with Aldermen Ballard, Tieman, Payton, Sapienza, Edgcomb, O’Sadnick, Lukosus and Moreno present. Mayor Kolowski present.

PUBLIC COMMENT

PRESENTATION

The Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp was General Manager June Keeley said the team wanted to stop in Peru first to express its appreciation and gratitude for the continuous support from the council and the city. Ms. Keely stated that since we stepped foot in the Illinois Valley, which was initially just a quick fix over the summer of 2021, the support has just grown and built,” she said. “And the enthusiasm, the excitement, the energy, it’s just so unbelievable. So, it’s really nice to see it culminate into a Prospect League championship.

The team won the Prospect League Championship 4-2 against Rex on Aug. 7 at Schweickert Stadium.

Mayor Kolowski thanked the team on behalf of the city of Peru for the energy it has brought to the community and the patrons who attended the games. Mayor Kolowski stated it is a wonderful. Assistant General Manager Lucas Burris went over the multiple records the team broke this year and said it couldn’t have happened without the fans. The Pistol Shrimp set new total, regular season, average and single-game attendance records this past season, registering more than 30,000 fans over the season. Mayor Ken Kolowski thanked the team on behalf of the city of Peru for the energy it has brought to the community and the patrons who attended the games.

MINUTES/FINANCIAL REPORTS/ACTIVITY REPORTS

Mayor Kolowski presented the Regular Minutes of September 23, 2024, and Special Meeting Minutes of

September 26, 2024. Alderman Payton made a motion the minutes be received and placed on file. Alderman

Edgcomb seconded the motion; motion carried.

FINANCE AND SAFETY COMMITTEE

Alderman Sapienza presented the following disbursements for payment on October 9, 2024:

Alderman Sapienza made a motion the disbursements be received, placed on file and bills paid in the usual manner. Alderman Tieman seconded the motion. Clerk Bartley called the roll with Aldermen Ballard, Tieman, Payton, Sapienza, Edgcomb, O’Sadnick, Lukosus and Moreno voting aye. Motion carried.

PUBLIC SERVICES COMMITTEE

Alderman Sapienza initiated a discussion regarding purchasing more trees for parks.

PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE

Electric Operations Manager Kevin Minnick reported he is working on getting Unit 4 online.

PROCLAMATIONS

Clerk Bartley presented a proclamation proclaiming October 2024 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

PETITIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS

Clerk Bartley presented a petition from Richard Weber seeking variances from the Zoning Ordinance for the property located at 704 6th Street, Peru, IL. Alderman Tieman made a motion the petition be received, placed on file and referred to the Planning/Zoning Commission for review and recommendation. Alderman Ballard seconded the motion; motion carried.

MAYOR’S NOTES

Mayor Kolowski thanked both LP High School and St. Bede Academy for their respective homecoming parades.

Adam Thorson, Director of Parks, Recreation and Special Events announced the start of the annual Halloween Decorating Contest with prizes for places first through fourth. (1st place-$200.00; 2nd place-$150.00; 3rd place-$100.00 and 4th place-$50.00.) (Prizes paid out in the form of gift cards).

Alderman O’Sadnick reported the Willie Buck event at Centennial Park on October 5th was a great conclusion to the Music Under the Oaks event.

PSM/Fire Chief Jeff reported that hydrant flushing will begin the week of October 14th and continue through October 25th.

Electric Operations Manager Kevin Minnick thanked the team for outage response efforts.

Alderman Tieman made a motion that the meeting be adjourned. Alderman Lukosus seconded the motion and motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 7:23 p.m.
