FOIA Request Sent to City of Spring Valley Regarding Building Permits on October 30, 2024

FOIA Request to City of Spring Valley Regarding Building Permits on October 30, 2024.

As a team from the Illinois Valley Times, we are committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs. In line with this commitment, we have sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the City of Spring Valley, Illinois. The request, dated October 30, 2024, seeks access to specific public records pertaining to residential and commercial building permits issued within the city.

The requested information includes a list of all new residential and commercial building permits issued from January 1, 2023 till the present date. The details we have asked for include the type of permit, date issued, fee paid, requester's name, address where the construction is planned or has taken place and contractor's name.

Additionally, we have also requested for a list of all active residential and commercial building permits along with their current status. The same fields as mentioned above have been asked for these active permits as well.

As media professionals involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. We believe that we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals due to our role in disseminating information.

We await a response from the City of Spring Valley regarding our request and will continue our work towards ensuring transparency in local government affairs.
