City of Ottawa Historic Preservation Commission met Nov. 14 

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

Present: Bob Eschbach, Chris Hasty, Chuck Stanley, George Cary Lorraine McCallister, Mollie Perrot, Rich Mennecke, Tami Koppen (staff)

Absent: Earle Lecki, Paul Havelka

Public Comment. No comments

Minutes. Moved by Bob Eschbach that the minutes for OHPC meeting held on October 10, 2024 be approved as amended. Second by Lorraine McCallister. All ayes. Motion passed.

Certificate of Appropriateness - American Legion, 901 LaSalle Street

The American Legion is proposing to remove glass block and existing windows, then install all-new windows that will fill the entire window opening.

Tom Shea and John Dubach from the American Legion attended the meeting. Tom said that the windowsills have water most of the time and they are drafty.

Basement windows will remain.

Moved by George Cary that a certificate of appropriateness be granted for 901 LaSalle Street to remove the glass block and existing windows, then install all-new windows that will fill the entire window opening. Second by Chuck Stanley. All ayes. Motion passed.

South Bluff Historic Survey (CLG Grant)

Tami reported that Lara picked up house surveys yesterday, she was taking a few photographs. Lara will be finishing the surveys in the next couple of weeks.

Commercial Historic District maps proposal

Tami presented a proposal from Post and Prairie Design to design a window cling and map for the downtown historic district.

Moved by Bob Eschbach that the proposal for Commercial Historic District map and window clings be approved but hold off on printing until a later date. Second by Chuck Stanley. All ayes. Motion passed.

Certificate of Appropriateness - 214 West Washington Street

Ottawa Funeral Home is proposing to demolish the structure, which has already been gutted internally. Commission discussed their plans to construct a shed, but no action was taken. Moved by Chuck Stanley that a certificate of appropriateness be granted for 214 West Washington Street to demolish the structure. Second by Rich Mennecke. All ayes. Motion passed.

Round Horse Fountain. Commission discussed historic signage on Court Street.

Jordan Block Sign

Frederick Douglass - Mark Twain – Methodist Church Sign.

Tami reported that both signs were ordered and will be completed in 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the weather. Dedication in the spring.
