Bureau County responsible for 48th-highest sales tax revenue in Illinois during 2023

Bureau County taxpayers paid the 48th largest sum in sales taxes in 2023, according to Illinois tax records.

In total, residents paid just over $4.5 million in sales taxes during 2023.

The county ranked 47th in the Prairie State the year before, with approximately $4.5 million spent in sales taxes.

The largest share of sales taxes paid by Bureau County residents in 2023 came from the Special County Retailers Occupation Tax.

The Special County Retailers Occupation Tax, a crucial revenue stream, is primarily allocated for county governments' use.

As of 2021, Illinois was the highest taxed state in the US. A study from Wallet Hub found Illinois taxes were 39.83% higher than the national average.
